SARUM: It’s a Big Tent

How the Use of Sarum Inspires Innovative

Contemporary Liturgy in the Time of COVID

Prof. John Harper

The Rev. Rita Powell

The Rt. Rev. Deon Johnson

This past year, the Episcopal Chaplaincy at Harvard designed and built a Sacred Tent. Through a process of community and collaboration, architect Benjamin Bromberg-Gaber and architectural historian Dr. Matthew Gin (both recent graduates from the Harvard School of Design) worked with Episcopal Chaplain, The Rev. Rita Powell, and students to imagine a dwelling in which to re-imagine our relationship to the architectural, liturgical, and conceptual structures of the church.

They turned to the Use of Sarum for inspiration.

COVID-19 has made innovation an imperative for the Church. Join us to examine how The Rev. Powell and Prof. Harper drew on Sarum rites to create a consecration liturgy for this visionary structure and how their work can inform creative liturgical thinking in your own situation.

The conference will also include a Sarum-inspired office from St. Asaph Cathedral in Wales and remarks from The Rt. Rev. Deon Johnson, Bishop of Missouri and member of the Episcopal Church’s Taskforce for Liturgical and Prayer Book Revision.
